Vitally important, what is a story without characters?
They are important, and are a backbone to a good story
Not very important, plot I feel is more vital
About as equal importance as the overall plot
It's important to have likeable characters, but wouldn't say they are the most important element

Why choose only one? I say read both as long as they're great books
Why ignore the classics? They are great stories and there's a reason they lasted!
Modern classics are my cup of tea
