Smart Goals For Tutors

This goal is not specific: The goal needs to detail a positive, observable skill the student will demonstrate e.g. take turns in classroom discussion, raise hand when has something to contribute.

The given goal is specific because it clearly states that Student X will alert teachers if his hearing aids and/or FM Unit is not working. It is measurable because it includes a specific target of 90% of the time. It is achievable because it is within the control of Student X to alert teachers. It is relevant because it addresses the issue of the hearing aids and FM Unit not working. It is timed because it specifies that the goal should be achieved by the end of term 3. Therefore, all elements of the goal are consistent with the SMART goals format.

You need to be able to judge whether the student has achieved the goal. Focus on a specific, observable, strength-based skill or behaviour.

Goals should quantify some aspect of the targeted skill or behaviour. Common methods are frequency or event count (number of times behaviour occurs), duration (length of time behaviour takes) and accuracy (number or level correct or other specified criteria)…. 3 out of 4 times, 80% of the time, 5 minutes out of every 10, with 75% success.
