Lesson Overview

Ever wondered what makes "tree" different from "love"? It's all about the "concrete nouns"! These are words for things you can actually see, touch, hear, smell, or taste. We use them all the time, and they make our sentences interesting.

What Are Concrete Nouns?

Concrete nouns are words that name things we can perceive using our five senses-sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. These nouns refer to physical objects, people, places, or things that have a tangible form.

How to Identify Concrete Noun in Sentences

When looking for concrete nouns in sentences, think about it: Can I use one or more of my senses to experience this thing? If yes, it's likely a concrete noun!

Scenario: You are planning a picnic in the park with your friends. You start packing everything you need. As you write your checklist, you notice a lot of concrete nouns!

Here is your checklist:

  • Basket
  • Sandwiches
  • Juice

  • Frisbee

Now let's put these into sentences and identify the concrete nouns:

Concrete Nouns Vs Abstract Nouns

Abstract nouns are ideas, feelings, or qualities that you can't touch, whereas concrete nouns are real and tangible, while abstract nouns are ideas and feelings.

Example:

At the birthday party, you might feel happy and excited. These feelings are abstract nouns. You can't touch them, but you can experience them.

Concrete Noun: Cake (You can touch it, see it, and taste it.)

Abstract Noun: Happiness (You can feel it, but you can't touch it.)
