It was authored by an American and the story takes place during the Civil War following a young private who is a member of the Union Army. This young private flees from battle but he's overcome with the shame and really wants to be wounded so that he can bear the blood wound or the red badge of courage as a means of countering his cowardice. But when his regiment faces enemy troops he acts as a standard-bearer.

The author was actually born after the Civil War and did not experience battle firsthand but this particular book is popular because of its realism and the contemporary accounts that were used as inspiration.
