For women, that cycle is referred to as the menstrual cycle. This cycle is typically every twenty eight days. During this time the female body undergoes regular changes. For one week it changes hormones in preparation for ovulation and an egg to drop. When an egg drops and is not inseminated, nothing happens save for menstrual bleeding.
If an egg drops, and intercourse takes place during the peak two days during which time women are ovulating, then the semen can inseminate the egg and pregnancy takes place in lieu of menstrual bleeding.
